They should start up pretty much at the same speed as any other similar file type.
Typically the player type runs like a media player and by default downloads the content before playing it.
If the content is on another server ( not running from media on your PC) then you should be looking at that servers permissions and wether it allows streaming of media, and the player type it will use, the browsers default actions for that player and file type.
