The prebuilt templates are sized to fit on most screen types.
The problem is that there are still a load of screens that are 600 pixels high. Most current netbooks letterbox and are 600 high so the content you make ought to fit on these.
Pretty much assume that you don't have more than 800x600 to use.
NEVER EVER assume that everyone or anyone else has the same set up as you. One of my work desktops is 6144 x 7068, my laptop is 1280x800.
