That would be tricky due to the way the module is constructed. If you look at the files called 1 and runtime you'll see the pages are generated on the fly using these XML docs as the templates for the layout and the content.
If the page layout was generated and then the content was an overlay you could but infortunately this isn't the case.
At file level you'd need to strip out all of the page template detail and then substitute in the new template details.
You could but it would be quite tricky, one small error and the whole thing would fall over :(
